Betty Houchin Winfield, volume editor and the person behind the new book, We Few, We Academic Sisters will discuss pioneering women in academia at a Town Hall Seattle event on December 4, 2023, located at the Wyncote NW Forum. Tickets start at $5. For tickets and more information, please go to this link.

The book tells the story of three trailblazing female professors hired in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With raw honesty and vulnerability, they discuss their childhoods, educational and research efforts, personal lives, and career advancements, as well as sexual discrimination and harassment and societal pressure to follow traditional roles. Their inspiring accounts highlight the importance of community and offer meaningful guidance to current women academics.

Elliott Bay Bookstore will be selling Winfield’s book at the event, or purchase one from them in advance.

“The story of how academia—and public life in general—has been transformed by feminism and other social upheavals needs to be told in this sort of granularity.”—Larry Gross, Professor, Annenberg School of Communication, University of Southern California

“This is a must-read for all feminist scholars…An invaluable resource and a riveting history!”—Sarah Banet-Weiser, Dean, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, and Research Professor, Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, University of Southern California
