Almost a Hero (Hardbound)
The Voyages of John Meares, R.N., to China, Hawaii and the Northwest Coast
J. Richard Nokes

Beginning in 1786, Captain John Meares of Great Britain bravely explored the North Pacific, but his attempt to dominate the fur trade between the Northwest Coast and Asia was frustrated when the Spanish navy seized his ships. Meares missed the opportunity to explore the Strait of Juan de Fuca or discover the Columbia River. Hence, he was “almost a hero.”

Tales from Aboard a Russian Trawler
Barbara A. Oakley

This riveting portrayal of espionage and comic adventure brings to life a little-known episode of American history when two cold-warring nations got together to fish in the north Pacific. Barbara Oakley built the controls for one of the few working Star Wars laser systems at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology.

Ranald MacDonald (Hardbound)
Pacific Rim Adventurer
JoAnn Roe

In 1848, Ranald MacDonald—son of a Hudson’s Bay Company official and a Chinook Indian princess—convinced the captain of an American whaling ship to cast him adrift in a rowboat off the northern Japanese coast. Held captive for nearly a year, MacDonald taught English to Japanese interpreters, some of whom interpreted for Commodore Perry when the U.S. Navy forced Japan to open its doors to outsiders in the 1850s.
